RSS News Feeds

News feeds send you relevant news stories and articles from websites which are delivered to you automatically once you have subscribed to them.  Subscribing to news feeds is completely free and you’re not sent junk mail from third parties, just news and information that you want.  The advantage of news feeds is that you don’t have to go searching the web for the information you need, it’s simply delivered to you just as easily as you get the post through your door.

RSS

News feeds are powered by RSS which stands for Really Simple Syndication, a way to put all of the relevant information about specific news feeds into HTML so that computers looking for feeds can read new content and deliver it to subscribers as soon as it is published with no effort on your behalf.  RSS feed pages aren’t really meant for users to read only computer programmes, as they’re written in HTML code.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to be able to decipher HTML to read RSS feeds.  The RSS page displays information about the news feed, the titles of recent stories and where they can be found.  A computer can then locate those stories and deliver them to a news feed reader where they can be read as regular text just as you would normally find news articles displayed.

News Readers

News readers are computer programmes designed to search out specific news feeds that you have subscribed to allowing you to quickly and easily check out the latest news that interests you rather than searching through dozens of irrelevant web pages.  There are two main types of news readers.  Browser-based news readers are now built into most new web browsers and are the most simple to use.  Then there are stand-alone news readers which work like an email client where rather than navigating to a web page to get your emails you can read them from a separate programme on your computer like Microsoft Outlook for example.  This means that news feeds are driven directly to your computer.  If you’re going to be surfing the internet a lot while needing your news feeds then a web-based news reader would probably suit you best but on the other hand, if you will need your news feeds while you’re offline then a standalone news reader would suit you better as you can read your news even when you’re not connected to the internet.

Subscribing to News Feeds

Once you find a news reader that you’re comfortable with you can start to subscribe to news feeds from your favourite sites.  News readers have varying methods to subscribe to news feeds.  Some make it a very simply process, normally requiring you to do no more than click a news feed icon whereas other news readers will require you to copy and paste the URL of the feed itself, which takes a little bit longer but still isn’t going to take long and you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to do it!

So that’s it.  There’s nothing to it.  Don’t forget to subscribe to Poker-Chips’ RSS feed so you don’t miss any of the great online poker promotions and offers which we bring to you daily.
