Online poker players say the UIGEA is unfair
This morning saw the UIGEA face further opposition as US lawmakers attempt to delay the bill from becoming law. The rushed legislation prohibits funds transfers between online poker and gambling sites and their customers. US online poker players say the UIGEA is unfair and badly constructed and have been objecting to it ever since its first inception.
The UIGEA, which is due to take effect this December after being rushed through by Republicans just before President Bush left office, has seen many objections from online poker players across the US and the rest of the world. The bill is badly thought out and full of discrepancies, which was rushed through on the back of a national security bill which distracted attention from it and made it very difficult to oppose. President Bush and his Republican party used a technique commonly known as the ‘midnight drop’ to implement the bill relatively unopposed, a technique normally reserved for matters of national security only.
The bill has caused one of the biggest upsets in poker history and has had an enormous effect on online poker sites around the world, heavily restricting online poker sites and other gambling websites around the world, forcing many of them to close their doors to millions in American online poker players for fear of huge financial penalties similar to those faced by Party Poker. U.S. House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank along with the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) and online poker players around the world have rallied for a new well thought out bill to be put in place to legalise and regulate online poker, which in turn would raise millions of dollars for the struggling US economy in the process.
The restriction for online poker players in the US will certainly continue in the near-future with valid arguments being put forward from both sides of the fence but one thing is for sure, if the UIGEA does become American law it will be far from the great legacy that Bush wanted to leave as his final goodbye to the White House.
