With 16 events played, 5 under way and 36 to go the 2010 World Series of Poker is up and running. Once again the world’s biggest poker showcase has drawn poker players from around the world together to do battle at the tables, with players from all walks of life ranging from amateurs who’ve qualified through online poker sites such as Party Poker to poker professionals and seasoned veterans.
In its forty-year history the World Series of Poker has grown from strength-to-strength going from an invitation only six-handed affair to become one of the biggest sporting showcases in the world and this year’s WSOP will be no different with players and teams sponsored by online poker sites such as Mike Sexton, voice of the World Poker Tour coverage and Party Poker pro, playing many different game variations, all battling it out in the greatest poker arena on earth.
The events kicked off on the 28th of May when Hoai Pham won the $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Holdem Event #1, walking away with $71,424 for his troubles. Since then a further 15 events have been decided and millions of dollars have been won. One of the big money winners so far is Frank Kassela from Memphis, Tennessee who has won $447,446 in Event # 15 - Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better which had a $10,000 buy-in, 170 players and a massive $1,598,000 prize pool.
There are many more exciting events to come during the next month with the finale being the Main Event which will consist of 12 days of gruelling poker and won’t even crown a champion until November. The final nine finishers on the 17th of July will then have a four-month break before returning to Las Vegas to battle it out to emulate last year’s winner, Joe Cada, who fought off 6,493 other poker hopefuls to take the greatest accolade in poker and earn himself a hefty $8,547,043 in the process.
